\nWhen the weather turns cold, our inmunological system is more susceptible of being attached by some microorganisms whose are stronger and resistant during the winter.
\nThese diseases specially affect old people and children so we have to take some measurements to prevent them, like trying to use warm clothes which protect us from the cold,
\nand avoiding extreme changes of temperature such as when we go out from a place with a high temperature because of the heating.
\nWe can also get the flu's vaccination every season.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"31179235","body":"The abovementioned recommendations must be taken into account because there are two serious health problems related to prolonged exposure to the cold: hypothermia and frostbite.
\n
\nThese illnesses can require medical attention immediately. For example, in case of hypothermia, we can have problems to think clearly or move well and severe cases of frostbite can lead to amputation of the affected area.","dateCreated":"1291486458","smartDate":"Dec 4, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"beatriz.eusamio","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/beatriz.eusamio","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"31411245","body":"As you both said, reduced winter temperatures have a negative effect on our health. But what about its effect on the environment? With this question I would like to link this subject with the subject on wich we have to right our essay: climate change. I think that winter is the season where we most pollute, precisely to avoid these health problems that we have mentioned. For example, heating systems. I understand that in northern countries, they are needed, but we don't always make a good use of them. They spend a lot of energy, and if this is for a good reason, I can't argue, but many times, we don't use them correctly. How many times have we seen an open window when the heating system is turned on high? those situations are the ones we must avoid, it's a useless waste of energy, and also of money.","dateCreated":"1291843893","smartDate":"Dec 8, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"cristina.hernando","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/cristina.hernando","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"31559053","body":"I think Cristina is right about the misuse of heaters and all its consequences. And as we are talking about the role of extreme winter on a contemporary and daily basis, I would like to keep talking about the cold weather on the modern society and its effects. I was not surprised when I read that the average mortality on a winter\u2019s day is about 15% higher than on a summer\u2019s day. As it been said, cold weather is directly responsible for deaths through hypothermia, influenza, and pneumonia. It is also an indirect factor in a number of human deaths and injuries from falls, accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning, and house fires all of which are partially attributable to cold.
\nThe sex and race of a person are important when it comes to how susceptible people are to direct cold injury and hypothermia. Women have a higher gradient of temperature from the skin to the body core (they're more likely to have cold hands for instance) and so it seems are more able to maintain a constant body core temperature in cold conditions. However, age has the highest influence with elderly people or children of any race or sex having the least ability to survive cold injury. So, as Raquel said, the people more likely to suffer with the reduced winter temperatures should be given the adequate information in order to prevent severe health problems.","dateCreated":"1292021000","smartDate":"Dec 10, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"catiaduque","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/catiaduque","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"31602543","body":"I\u00b4m completely agree with both points of view. The reduced winter temperatures have two different groups of effects:
\nFirstly, the reduced temperatures change the daily life of people. All of us use the heating, I have the same opinion as Cristina, people should become aware of the energy we spend if we use heating systems without control. In my opinion these lower temperatures are the consequence of the climate change. Every winter the temperatures decrease 1-2\u00baC and every summer the temperatures increase so we have to get awareness of it.
\nSecondly, I\u00b4m agree with Raquel, every time the season changes, our body takes time to get accustomed to it, giving infections an opportunity to attack it. The most common diseases in winter are the common cold, coughs sore throats and the flu. I think that hypothermia and frostbite are not very common in our country so we have to take action to prevent frequent symptoms.","dateCreated":"1292188472","smartDate":"Dec 12, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"martapradas","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/martapradas","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"31790171","body":"As Cristina has said, I think that the most important point of the topic is the effect of reduced winter temperatures on the environment and and also on our way of living.
\nFor example, our grandparents have always talked about very low temperatures in winter, sometimes lower than nowadays. Obviously things are different because of climate change. As well as there are some years that temperatures are not so low in winter, there are others in which temperatures decrease steeply.
\nAs temperatures are changing every time, even during winter, we should adapt our way of living according to the weather, as all the animals do. Despite doing that, we use different ways in order to pretend the weather to be as we want to. In fact it is a very good idea, and necessary, because we have to protect ourselves from low temperatures, but as my colleagues have said, we must use them correctly. Personally, I really hate the fact of wearing warm clothes to stay outside, and then, when you go into a place, you can\u2019t stay comfortable because of the heat. Because of this fact, sometimes our body can\u2019t adapt itself to this sudden change, and that\u2019s when some diseases can develop.
\nTo sum up, I think that decreased winter temperatures affect directly to our way of living in this period of the year, and we should be able to adapt to this situation, in spite of trying to adapt the weather to our lives without responsibility.","dateCreated":"1292440986","smartDate":"Dec 15, 2010","userCreated":{"username":"rocio.bermejo","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/rocio.bermejo","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
